Peter's Celebration Day at Brockhill

Created by Donna Hawkes 13 years ago
On Tuesday over 800 staff and students – past and present - with friends came together to celebrate the very special life of much loved Drama Teacher, Peter Catmull, who lost his brave fight to cancer recently. Brockhill Vice Principal, Jackie Mortimer explained ‘Peter was in school working with his year 13 A Level students just 10 days before his death, so that they could receive feedback prior to their Drama exam. This is a measure of the man, selfless and always focuses on his students’. She continued ‘Peter was the kind of teacher who years later you will remember, and about whom you will tell your children. He was inspirational and humble at the same time. He was a teacher, a friend and a colleague in a million. We miss him, but continue to pay tribute to his legacy with determination and hopefully a little of that special touch we have all witnessed’. The extensive Brockhill site played host to a range of performances and the beautiful summers evening allowed many to take place outside – from Drama on the Farm, to music in the new Memorial Garden, a Art Exhibition and the choir singing the beautiful ‘Baba Yetu’ – the Lord’s Prayer in Swahili on the school field overlooking the English Channel. Visitors promenaded between performances and stopped awhile to watch past and present students perform in Peter’s memory. Performances were chosen especially for their significance to Peter. The stunning Dance performance was just one of the highlights with boys from year 8 to returning students working together to perform a wonderfully moving piece that received an immediate standing ovation. The evening ended with past Principal, Tony Lyng and current Principal, Sonette Schwartz formally naming the School Theatre ‘The Peter Catmull Theatre’ together, hundreds of blue balloons with Peter’s initials on were then released. The evening was a fitting tribute to a wonderful life.
